Yesterday was day one of my road trip. I had spent the previous two days trying to decide where to go, going back and fourth between Memphis/Arkansas and The Badlands. When I left the house I still hadn't decided and even ended up driving a few miles North, but everything was telling me Memphis was where I should be going, so after about 5 miles I turned around and headed towards Memphis.
Day 1: It was a pretty uneventful drive from Lebanon to the Missouri/Arkansas border. At the border I made an unscheduled stop at Grand Gulf State Park - Missouri and Mammoth Spring State Park - Arkansas.
My first stop was Grand Gulf State Park, home of the Little Grand Canyon. I had been to both parks several times before, but not after it had rained(It was still sprinkling on me at both parks). Right after the rain is the best time to go to Grand Gulf! There was a huge waterfall down in the canyon and I got some really great pictures of it.
At Mammoth Spring there was a lot of wildlife out in the park. I got pictures of a turtle digging a hole to lay it's eggs. Three Muskrats grazing in some aquatic plants and then one of them startled a snake that was in the grass and it swam off. Then it swam back by and brushed up against the back of one of the muskrats. I got pictures, but I'm not sure how good they will turn out. It might be hard to see the snake with all the plants around. Then there was a duck with about 15 babies swimming around and I also got just your regular shots of the park.
I also stopped at a State Park in Arkansas, but I can't remember the name. There was a historic court house there and some log cabins.
After that I drove on to Memphis and I was surprised how much flat farmland there is here in Arkansas! I've never been to this part of Arkansas before, just down to places like Hot Springs, Little Rock and Eureka Springs, so when I think Arkansas I think of lots of hills.
At Memphis I got a hotel and just decided to chill out for a while and catch up on some rest. The weekend at work was my long weekend, so not much sleep. On top of that I got up really early to head out on the road trip. On top of it all, I'm sick! Saturday I had a soar throat, that went away Sunday and my nose started running. But a little cold isn't going to stop me from Adventuring!
It's a little before 8:00 a.m. here and I'm in my motel room getting ready to head out and start exploring Memphis.
