Why the gun debate is pointless.
After the Sandy School shooting the debate for gun control has really heated up. People think gun control would stop crime, when in fact it would actually increase crime!
Criminals don't care if something is illegal or not, this is why they are criminals. So the whole issue of control is about as pointless as those "No Concealed Weapons Allowed" signs on the doors of businesses. It may turn around a law abiding citizen at the door, but does anyone seriously think it will stop someone who is going in rob the place or cause harm to someone inside? If anything it would encourage them more, because to criminals that sign might as well say "Attention Criminals This Is A Defense Free Zone: For Your Convenience All Law Abiding Citizens Have Been Disarmed".
Right now criminals can get legal guns illegally at some inconvenience. If guns were banned criminals can get illegal guns illegally at some inconvenience. All a gun ban would do is keep law abiding citizens from getting guns and make them defenseless against crime.
If guns were banned the market for guns smuggled into the United States would see a drastic increase. The market for these guns now are mostly gangs and more organized crime who desire automatic weapons. Take away the slight inconvenience of getting legal guns and more small time criminals will turn to these sources. But instead of having to deal with the semi-automatic AR-15 bought at Wal-mart these guns would be fully automatic AR-15s or AK-47s from other countries. Not to mention the ramifications this would cause by giving those smugglers and gangs a new source of revenue and power.
Guns aren't some marvel of technology created in a lab by rocket scientist! Guns have been being made since before there was electricity. And while they have come along way since those times, so have the tools which can be used to make them.
Guns really aren't very complex, they are pretty simple really. A revolver for example isn't much more than a block of steel carved out in less than an hour on a CNC mill with a few screws and springs thrown in. The hardest part would be designing the blue prints to program into the CNC machine to make one, but given the demand those would be available to download on the Internet in no time.
Small legal gun makers are popping up all over the United States right now. You no longer have just the huge makers like Remington, Winchester, Colt, Smith & Wesson. But dozens of small gun makers are now showing up in the market.
Even with all these legal guns, illegally made guns are still a problem. Take for example a .22 cal. gun designed to look like a cell phone. Despite it being illegal it hasn't stop them from making them, selling them, and buying them.
Sure if guns were banned you may not see the same quality, craftsmanship, or durability of the guns on the market today. But criminals don't need a precision weapon to take down a deer 200 yards away, they just need it to go bang and kill.
I heard the other day someone had even made a gun using one of the new plastic printers. The gun was able to fire five shots before it broke.
These illegally made guns would have no serial numbers or known manufacturer. So if they were used in a crime there would be no paper trail for law enforcement to follow. They would have no regulation and no taxes on them, 100% of the revenue would go to criminals to fund more of their criminal activities.
It is already illegal for criminals to own guns. A convicted felon cannot own, possess or purchase a weapon, those with mental illness, convicted of domestic violence, cannot either, etc. A criminal background check is done before the purchase can be complete. It is also illegal to purchase a firearm for another person. These protocols worked with the shooter at the Sandy schools and he was not able to purchase a firearm a week before the shooting. He obtained the weapons illegally by stealing them from his mother when he killed her.
Also banning assault style weapons doesn't do a lot either. Take the Texas Tower Massacre in 1966 for example or Columbine. The weapons used were hunting rifles, pistols or shotguns. Hi-cap magazines are like the soda ban in new york, instead of buying one, you just buy two.
Because of this I think a few people on capital hill still have enough brains to realize this, so guns will never be completely banned. Those arguing gun control are just politicians making a show to get voters. In the end they know banning guns would do nothing except make things worse in the long run.
