Richland Fireworks And Other Stuff
The fireworks display in Richland tonight was really good. For such a small town they have a huge display! It lasted probably 15 minutes, just when you think it's over there is more! Usually they set off a whole bunch of once in a grand display as their finally, Richland did that several times tonight.
Last time we went was five years ago they only set fireworks off on the baseball field. This time they set fireworks off on the baseball field and also at another spot. It put the display they had at the Marshfield Rodeo to shame!
We got there about 5:30 and the fireworks didn't start until about 9:30. So it's a lot of sitting and waiting in the heat. There isn't a whole lot of shade and because of the parking situation we weren't able to use our vehicle for shade. People were parked blocks and blocks away, I'm sure thousands turned out for it. If we ever go again, we'll get there even earlier to avoid the parking situation.
They have a local band, probably volunteers. I didn't even get the name of the ones playing this year, if they even had a name. They did covers of popular rock songs from the last 20 years. Last time I went it was a different rock band playing. A bit unusual since most small town events in this area get country bands.
A good thing about while you wait they have a concession stand. The main items are hot dogs, hamburgers and BBQ pork sandwiches. The pretty good and actually cheap! They only charge $1 for hot dogs and $1-1.50 for hamburgers. It's hard to find those prices at concession stands!
Noticed tonight the vibration reduction on my camera lense had been switched off. I wonder how long it's been like that? Switched it back on.
Since it was dark and my camera was having a hard time focusing on the fireworks. There is nothing to focus on until a firework goes off. It kept having to refocus itself over and over. So I thought I'll just switch over to manual, focus it in and leave it there since the distance of the fireworks isn't going to change. I guess in manual focus my camera will take photos in burst non-stop. I almost always shoot with auto-focus on and I thought it would just take a series of burst 5-7 pause for a second to buffer / process / whatever it does and then be good again for another burst of 5-7. While I was shooting in manual I didn't notice that pause, it seemed like it would do burst for as long as I held my finger on the trigger. Fully Automatic!
As a photographer I really hate this growing trend of high visibility neon yellow clothing. People are getting this stuff in shirts, hats, jackets, even shoes. Not only do my eyes feel like they are staring at the sun every time I look at it, but it stands out like a sore thumb in pictures. Are these people doing road work? Expecting to be caught in an avalanche? Trying to be seen from outer space? Take a picture of a beautiful landscape and there is somebody five miles away hiking. Stadium full of people and they stand right out! Well sort of, it's getting to be so popular now they just stand out among the rest of the people standing out. It's incredibly distracting in photographs!
