Part 2: The Adventure Begins: My advice avoid the bus travel if you can.
Getting from my house to the bus stop proved to be a challenge. I gave myself plenty of time to get there thankfully. I called the local taxi service and all they would tell me they were busy and would get to me when they could. They refused to give me any kind of time estimate, so I just crossed them off the list. Luckily I was able to find a ride or I would have had to walk.
This was my first time I have ridden a Greyhound Bus and I had heard horror stories about them. Let me tell you all the stories are true!!!! It was an overnight bus and I had hoped to get some sleep on the bus, but that didn't happen! I was the only person to get on in Lebanon and when I did the bus was already crowded. There were a few empty seats, but people were hogging them stretched out sleeping. There was one guy awake at the front of the bus, so I had him move over and squeezed in. At least he was awake, but I figure a lot of people may have just been pretending to sleep so they wouldn't have to sit next to anyone.
Most of the people on the bus you wouldn't want to sit next to anyway. There were a few decent people on the bus, a very few!!! Most of the passengers were from the bottom of society. Criminals, trashy people from the smaller towns and trashy people from the ghettos, several people who I can only assume were homeless from their tattered clothes, unkempt appearance and filth.
About half the people on the bus were sick and I instantly regretted not bringing hand sanitizer. After I got home from my trip I woke up the next day with a horrible sore throat which turned into a terrible cold and then finally a terrible cough before I started feeling better. I blame the buses for getting me sick!
The guy I set next to on the bus seemed somewhat normal at first, maybe a little eccentric. The farther down the road we would get the stranger he got though. At the layover in St. Louis when we changed buses I planned on being one of the first people on the new bus so I could get my own seat and hopefully get some sleep.
The St. Louis Greyhound station was not some place I would let my guard down. Homeless people sleeping on the benches and walking around inside. They have security guards, but I don't think they do much. There was one guy who kept walking around and I didn't like the way he was eyeballing everything. He looked a little crazy, maybe on drugs, but predatory too. Like he was about to do something if he got the opportunity, maybe see something good and snatch it and run. I got the feeling he was one of the regular homeless, one of the security guards finally got into it with him and tried to run him off. He pretty much didn't care and ignored the security guard, security guard just let him go because it wasn't worth the hassle.
Meanwhile the guy who I had sit next to on the bus ride from Lebanon to St. Louis had gone completely crazy by this point. He was ahead of me as we are standing in line waiting to get on the bus. He kept knocking his suitcase over into me and I'd set it back up, then he kept undoing the rope between the posts like he was going to get out of line and go somewhere but he would just step out a few feet and come back. That was a little annoying, but nothing major. Then we start boarding the bus and he gets into it with the bus driver over nothing. She was the type of woman who didn't take crap from nobody, I liked her! He would give her attitude and she would give it right back, it brought a smile to my face! I think she finally told him to just shut up and get on the bus. I blew right on past him as he was loading his suitcases and hoped on the bus. Every time he would lift a suitcase he would have to do a karate yell like he was about to pinch a board into. He was still out there loading his suitcases and I was on the bus and I could hear him. HHHIYYYAAAA!! I didn't see him when we got off the bus in Chicago, but I could hear him unloading his suitcases. HHHHIIYYAAA! I also heard from another passenger he got into it with the bus driver in Chicago again because the bus was late due to accidents on the interstate, like she can control that.
I thankfully got a seat to myself, the bus wasn't as crowded since a lot of people got on connecting buses to other locations. Maybe now I could get some sleep..... nope!!!
People were so noisy!! One guy was especially getting on my nerves setting across the isle and one seat ahead. He was black and listening to some black ghetto trash program on his phone. Every other word was in N-word and the words between were profanity. I almost managed to doze off once, but was startled back awake by the sounds of a girl screaming as she was raped and murdered blasting from the guys phone. I'm thinking people are trying to sleep, it's 3:00 a.m., there are children on the bus! If you want to use your phone to watch stuff bring a pair of headphones or at least turn the volume down low.... then I realized he did have earbuds in!!!
