Pancakes
Started off today thinking I had lost my spare battery for my camera. After searching the house twice I gave up and headed to Springfield, only to find it hiding in my Jeep's cup holder.
The drive to Springfield was pretty relaxing, except when you would go pass an on ramp. You had to really watch the cars coming onto the interstate because of all the big chunks of ice being blown off them as they picked up speed. It was a beautiful drive down though with the sun glistening off the ice covered tree branches along the road. I saw a family of about 6 deer running along the opposite side for a ways until they darted into the woods, it was really beautiful.
Once I got to Springfield I ate at the historic Aunt Martha's Pancake House. There I tried the southern cornmeal pancakes and they were yummy! They came with whipped butter and warm maple syrup. But at each table there are already three different types of syrup to choose from, so I did a bit of syrup sampling as I ate. The staff was really friendly and the service was excellent. I was barely half way through my drink when my waitress brought me a refill. Aunt Martha's is in the original building it started out in, so it has an old charm to it that takes you back to the days of Route 66. It's always been a popular stop on the country music singers passing through, just a few years back Willy Nelson stopped in to chow down.
After breakfast I went to Battlefield Mall and walked around for a while. It made me feel kind of old with all the young kids in there. It seems the last few years the mall is going more towards marketing to girls. There isn't a whole lot for guys and what there is, just isn't my style.
Leaving the mall empty handed I headed over to Sam's to get gas and stopped by Academy Sports to pick up some ammo. They had already sold what they had of the hard to find calibers though, so I left there empty handed as well.
I then met my buddy Jonathan (a.k.a. The Local Ozarkian) at Bass Pro. We had decided to check out the new archery museum which just opened there. It isn't huge as it is just one of several museums which will be located at Bass Pro, but they do have some interesting stuff. One of the things I was pleasantly surprised to see there was Geronimo's bow and quiver! I didn't even know it still existed having assumed it was just one of those things lost to time.
Leaving the archery museum we decided to check out the fish feeding show. It was really dark and very crowded so neither one of us were able to get very good pictures. It only lasted about 30 minutes, 10-15 of which were telling about the store. Afterwards the announcer brought out a live rat snake to show to the crowd, it was mostly children who were interested though.
Next we decided to go to Lake Springfield Park. I had never been there before, but Jonathan goes there frequently. We didn't stay long or do much there because it was so wet and muddy from the recent weather. The only wildlife we saw were geese, lots and lots of Canadian geese!
I plan on going back to Lake Springfield Park when the weather is a little nicer. There are some trails and a place where you can rent kayaks and canoes, add that to my summer agenda!
After dropping Jonathan off at Bass Pro I headed to Sam's to get some groceries. Just the regular stuff, but I bought some Sprite and Dr. Pepper. I had been trying to drink diet lately, but I'm giving up on the diet soda. I keep hearing it's worse long term than regular. The flavor choices are somewhat limited at Sam's so I had been drinking Diet Dr. Pepper and Coke Zero. No gripes about the diet Dr. Pepper. But Coke Zero didn't take my long to get burned out on! It tastes fine, but it seems like drinking a can doesn't satisfy my thirst at all or even makes me thirstier.
