The Zoo
Went to Springfield today and stopped at the new Lew's Fishing / Sportsmans Factory Outlet or whatever it's called in Strafford. It seems they can't decide on a name! When I got there and went to check-in on Facebook I couldn't find it because it's listed as Sportsmans Factory Outlet. It says Lew's Fishing all over the building. Then when you Google it "Do Outdoors" comes up as another name for it. So whatever it's called, I went to the new fishing place in Strafford.
It was really disappointing! It's this huge building and I thought the whole thing was like another Bass Pro. Most of the building is corporate offices and distribution, the store is pretty small and the museum is just one room. To be fair I'm not really into fishing and it's pretty much 100% fishing. I didn't see any camping gear or other outdoor stuff like that, just fishing stuff. I thought the stuff seemed expensive, but I'm not into fishing enough to give a good comparison on the prices.
The museum is really small and has three small boats in it which take up a lot of the room. There were also several racks of fishing poles which looked new and like they were for sale.
After the fishing place I went to Dickerson Park Zoo and got my membership there. I saw ticket prices had really gone up since the last time I was there. It has probably been a year or two since I went to the zoo, but it seems like the last time I went I only paid $6-8 to get in. It is now $12, so a pretty big price increase! If you plan on going more than a couple times a year the membership is the way to go!
There were only a few other people in the zoo while I was there. Probably a factor of it being a weekday and the weather. I didn't get to see all the zoo or stay as long as I wanted because it started raining. While I was there they brought in two young hippos that are going to be house temporarily at the zoo. I got to see them take them off the truck and and put them into the new enclosure. I was pretty excited thinking they were going to put the straps under the hippos and lift them out of the boxes with the crane and set them down in the enclosure. Instead they lifted the whole box with the crane and sit it down in the enclosure. They also had the area roped off too far back to get a good view with a lot of trees in the way. I still managed to get some pictures of them offloading one box and a video of them offloading the other.
I only saw a handful of fall decorations around the zoo. I thought they would have a lot of Halloween decorations out like they used to. Maybe they are waiting until later in October or they don't do that anymore. There were also some areas under construction so maybe that is the reason they are holding off this year. I think they used to call it "Spooktacular", I looked at their calendar and they have nothing listed this month. They must no longer be doing anything for Halloween, that is disappointing.
But I'm glad I've got a membership again, now I'll be able to go several times this year and take pictures. I would like to adopt an animal again later on, maybe do a contest on my website and people can vote on which animal I adopt.
After I left the zoo I went to Academy. They were pushing really hard to get me to buy a crossbow on sale for $50 off.... they must work on commission. I resisted the temptation though, even though I've been planning on buying a crossbow. Plus I've seen a lot of crossbows on Ebay's daily deals lately and think I can beat that price. Plus online you don't have to pay taxes, just like Donald Trump! lol They did have a really pretty Browning throw blanket I regret not buying. I liked the colors and it's my style,... I'll probably end up getting it.
