Computers and The Internet
I bought a new desktop computer this week. Nothing really fancy as I just use it for photo editing and surfing the internet. It's getting difficult to find a desktop computer! When I was shopping for one it seemed most of them are marketed towards businesses. All-In-Ones seem to be the new desktops for home use and they don't seem to be in great demand. I think now when people get a computer they just get a laptop because they have caught up to desktops in performance and features.
I use my laptop all the time! I'm writing this blog on my laptop right now. But I find it easier to edit photos and do tasks like that on my desktop. Sometimes I feel like I'm one of the few people who till use a computer to get on the internet. I have a couple hundred people on my Facebook friends list and maybe a handful of us ever get on Facebook with a computer, most people use only their cell phones. I feel outdated even saying cell phones, I guess it's just phones now. Not very many people even have a land-line phone anymore.
I'm pretty happy with my new desktop, an upgrade was long overdue! My old computer was probably around 10 years old. Every time I would shut it down it would try to install a bunch of updates unsuccessfully and take as much as an hour or two to shut down. A real pain if I needed to get back on it because I forgot to do something, because I couldn't until it was finished.
After getting the new computer set up I realized how old the photo editing software was which I had been using. So old in fact my favorite program isn't even compatible with the new computer. I think I may have even been using it on my previous computer, but it was a Tiffen program mostly for applying filters. I didn't even bother trying to install my Photoshop software. It was Photoshop 9 and I was like I need to upgrade!
So I got online to look for some new photo editing software. Apparently software is obsolete now, Apps are the new thing. Adobe has stopped making Photoshop and Lightroom software you can buy, Photoshop and Elements 14 and Lightroom 6 were the last software. They are now making Apps you have to subscribe to for $10-50 per month. It's greed! You could buy software and make it last for a few years even though newer versions came out. Now they are guaranteed you pay the full price of a new software version every year.
I don't want the cost or the hassle of a subscription so I bought the last versions Photoshop and Elements 14 and Lightroom 6. I don't do a lot of heavy editing on my photos anyway. I crop a lot, adjust the lighting or contrast sometimes or use a filter. I'm just going to try to make do with this software for as long as I can, I did pretty good making do with the last software!
For the last year I've noticed the design of the internet is changing. I don't like it! It's getting less and less for computers accessing it and more and more for phones accessing it. I know it's only supply and demand, but I don't have to be happy about it!
