Happy Halloween!
It has been a pretty crappy week, mostly just because things didn't go the way I wanted them too. It's been a set back, but "I've not yet begun to fight!".
I know I haven't been posting a lot, but I've been laying pretty low lately. Money is really tight, so I haven't been going out on as many adventures lately. I don't see this changing for a while unfortunately.
Today I went to Springfield with the family to celebrate my step-dad's birthday. We ate at Ziggie's Cafe and went to a few stores. The rain held off until we got to Springfield and while we were in Ziggie's it started raining and I don't think it has stopped since.
Movies I've watched lately have been Dark Shadows a semi-comedic vampire movie with Johnny Depp. I would give it a 6.5 out of 10. Watched Oblivion with Tom Cruise and really liked it! I would give Oblivion a 8.5 out of 10. I also watched After Earth which was pretty much as bad as everyone says it is! I didn't realize it was an M Night Shyamalan movie until it was to late. Watching his movies is comparable to sticking a fork in your eye, actually the fork in the eye might be better. After Earth is about a 1 out of 10.
I decided to trick or treat this year after all. I can't afford to buy "the good stuff" so no fun size candy bars this year to hand out. What I bought is pretty decent though, I only spent about $20 on candy this year and got four bags. A huge bag of dum dum suckers for filler, mini-packs of Skittles, a few warheads, sweet tarts, smarties, and things like that. I was always happy to get that stuff as a kid, sweet tarts were some of my favorites. I think as a kid the only candy I didn't like was the Halloween candy that came in the plain orange or plain black wrappers. Those I always gave to my parents and luckily my mom loves those.
We stopped at the Wal-mart in Marshfield on our way home from Springfield which is where I got most of the Halloween candy. I don't really have the money to buy a nice costume, but I figured I would look for a cheap mask in the $5-10 dollar range. They only had three masks left and I overheard a lady on her phone calling her son to see which one he wanted. I didn't want to get a mask and then a kid comes along and can't get one because there are none left.
I have a whole trunk of Halloween costumes I bought in years past at after-Halloween clearance sales. Unfortunately this trunk isn't easily accessible as my very large and very heavy tv is sitting on it. Without completely rearranging my bedroom I don't have the space to just lift the tv off and sit it down anywhere. Maybe tomorrow I can get the far enough towards the back of the trunk with the wall supporting it up I can get the lid open just enough to stick my arm in and blindly rummage around. Why do I have a trunk full of Halloween costumes? I thought they might come in handy sometime as photography props.
In addition to not being able to afford the good candy or the wicked awesome costume, decorating was also not in the budget. Fortunately past me was really awesome and sent me decorations! I remembered a few years back I bought a some tombstone decorations on clearance after-Halloween.
I took my shower tonight and I got out about midnight. It has just turned Halloween and I step out of the shower, dry off and slip on a fresh pair of boxers. I look down and nearly step on a huge spider. I jerked my foot back so fast my big toe went numb and I was like was it because I jerked my foot back so fast or did it bite me and I'm feeling the effects of the venom? The spider takes off running like lighting and dashes under my towel, but I know right where he is because his butt is sticking out.
I start looking around the bathroom for something to smash him with. It's surprisingly hard to find a good bashing tool! Some shampoo bottle heads aren't that big and missing is to risky and he runs off to lurk in the shadows..... watching..... waiting. The bottoms of half the bottles are indented so you just think you've smashed him but he's just in the hollow cavity and you've only trapped him. You lift the bottle off expecting to see blood and guts only to find he's unharmed and now really pissed off!
As I look around for a blunt instrument of smashing I am ambushed by another and even larger spider! Same species, but a little bigger and thicker body...... I assume the angry overly protective boyfriend. It's running around on the floor between my legs, I'm dancing, finally it bolts under the edge of the cabinet.
I spot a bottle that will do and smash the first one to bits. But how am I going to kill the second one? I grab a bottle of spider spray and gas him! It's chemical warfare he comes charging out towards me and makes it a good four inches before collapsing. I sprayed him so much he turned white!..... and then I squashed him for good measure. Scooped them up with a q-tip and a piece of paper. I know snakes can bite you even after they are dead, I don't know about spiders, even if they are smashed to bits.... not going to risk it! The second one had black tar like guts, wasn't sure if guts or poison. I gave them a proper burial in the porcelain sea.
Now wide awake and probably not sleeping anytime soon I finish dressing and as long as I'm up might as well go dig out those tombstones to decorate with. Past me is really awesome and decided to send some gifts to future me! Excellent! *Bill & Ted air guitar*. I found about 4-5 large styrofoam tombstones, two Halloween signs, a skull which emits fog, a bottle of fake blood, a full size cardboard coffin (some assembly required) and a couple other things. But now I'm sitting here listening to the wind and rain outside and hoping it stops so I can throw some quick decorations up before the Trick or Treaters start arriving.
I was watching episodes of American Pickers on History tonight and all of a sudden they pulled up to pick a prison. I thought it looked just like the Missouri State Penitentiary. They went inside and everything looked so familiar from when I toured it. I think the guy who they met up with was even the same guy who was my tour guide! All they picked were a few paintings which had been done by the prisoners. But for just being a show about pickers they did a really good job telling some of the history and a couple of the many stories from the prison. It was their newest episode, their Halloween special. They go three other places, something about a Mole Man, a place in Oklahoma and the Penitentiary. I was online so it was more just background noise and I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention until the Penitentiary came on. They are replaying this episode a couple times a week so I would really recommending checking it out if you are a fellow Missourian or just want to learn about an interesting place with a lot of history.
I'm getting tired enough to go to bed, but now I'm kind of sucked into this program on the History Channel called "The Real Story of Halloween". It is amazing how much Halloween has changed through the years! It makes you wonder how our holidays will evolve from here. I think my generation was really lucky, we had it best. Christmas, Halloween, all the holidays were the best when we were kids. Fireworks were so cheap when I was a kid, Christmas lights were everywhere and we had toys still and the best Christmas movies. Now toys are kind of out and electronics are in, electric bills are so high you don't see many lights. The lights are all those little string lights. When I was kid we had those big colored bulbs, I remember it would be cold and snowing and you could go up to your house and warm you hands on the bulbs.... yeah that probably wasn't safe! lol Halloween was pretty bad up until less than 100 years ago, but when I was a kit it was pretty awesome, maybe at it's peak. Costumes were awesome and it was still scary. It's kind of lost the scary, now it's just dress up in a costume day.
Interesting Halloween fact the mask used in the movie Halloween was a cheap Captain Kirk Mask. On that note, I'm going to call it a night.
