White House Down and The Purge reviews. - Spoiler Alerts!
Today I went to Springfield with my mom and we ate at Ziggie's and picked up some groceries. But while I was down there I rented White House Down and The Purge from Redbox.
We will start out with White House Down, because frankly The Purge got on my nerves. White House Down is a very similar movie to Olympus Has Fallen. Between the two of them I prefer Olympus Has Fallen. The first half of White House Down wasn't that great, I found myself think Olympus Has Fallen was a lot better! White House Down got better towards the end and then it equaled out. There were some really cheesy things in it they could have left out. Like the President joy riding in the helicopters 30 feet below the reflecting pond, little things like that.
Now for The Purge, there were so many things about this movie which annoyed me! The number one thing, the kids!!!! Just running off, disappearing, doing their own thing in the house in that situation. The shielding on the house, did it have convenient handles on the front so they could just hook the chains up to them and pull them off the house? Wouldn't it make sense to make the outside surface flat so there would be nothing to hook a chain onto. Choice of weapons a revolver with only 6 shots? How about a Glock 22 with 16 shots? Or the 12 gauge shotgun with the pump handle on top, looks good on screen, yet totally impractical in real life. Then letting the people go at the end so they can kill you in the next purge and not inviting the black guy back to hang out next year, especially now that your husband is dead.
The concept of The Purge I am very mixed about. What I don't agree about is the rich and more successful in society are the victors and the poor and less successful in society are the ones getting slaughtered. I think it would be the exact opposite! The lower end of society would plow over the upper end because they are much more adapt and the criminal element is a lot more used to violence.
The other thing I didn't buy was the benefit it would have to society, namely crime reduction outside of the purge. If you killed some one's child or significant other, purge or no purge they are going to want revenge. And the truly sick individuals like the main bad guy wouldn't have the self control to wait a full year for the next purge.
What I do agree about is the aspect of human nature. In a consequence free environment a lot of people would take advantage of that. Be it murder, rape, looting, arson, etc. Especially in circumstances like this where it was socially acceptable and and even encouraged. Inside every single one of us is a murderer, a rapist, a child molester, a thief, etc. The key is the decisions we make and who we choose to be that make us who we are. A relevant quote said about religion in regards to heaven and hell also applies to this. "If we are only good because we seek the reward and fear the punishment then a truly sorry lot we are indeed." Both evil and goodness exists in all of us in a constant state of battle which we determine the outcome of.
I am a huge believer in what I call "Self Evolution". Things like frogs evolve physically to adapt to their environment. As a species we have the unique ability to adapt and evolve mentally. The Purge would be a social event on the level of The Holocaust.
Mixed emotions on The Purge, because I don't agree with the idea of it or the results. But I do agree it is a reflection of the dark side of man found in all individuals and reinforced throughout history and social experiments. What keeps us in check is the hive mind, who we are as a collective. We are a social creature and what is socially acceptable plays a huge influence on who we are. You'll also find this to be the real reason for the sky high crime rates in the U.S..... but that is a blog for another day.
