The Kiss
The sky was black as ink, except for thousands of sparkling stars that glistened like freshly polished diamonds. The stars felt so close as if you could reach out and scoop up a handful. But he wasn't looking at them he was only looking at her as she gazed up into the heavens. To him the stars did not exist, neither did all the worlds among them, or even the one they were on. To him, in this moment, only she existed.
They sit there on the tailgate of his pickup truck next to each other, their legs dangling down in the cool night air. There was not a cloud in the sky and a gentle breeze blew through the night air. He detected a slight shiver in her body and without even thinking removed his coat and placed it around her shoulders.
She pulled the coat tight around her as if she was wrapping her body with him. To her it was him, the smell of him, his cologne, filled her with the thought of him. For a moment she as she gazed up at the stars she did not see them, she only saw him, felt him, as if they were one. She placed her hand in his hand as a smile spread across her lips.
He felt her hand glide into his and their fingers intertwined like a key in a lock. Her skin was warm and soft and her hand much smaller than his. Suddenly she squeezed his hand tightly!
"Look a shooting star!" she exclaimed in a soft Midwestern voice. Without taking her eyes off the stars she said "Make a wish!"
He paused, never looking up into the sky. He could think of nothing more he wanted right now than her. Her olive skin seemed to glow under the moonlight and the slight curls of her dark hair fell about her shoulders and danced about her face as a small gust of win gently played with it.
Finally words broke his lips "You've already came true".
She slowly turned her head to meet his, their eyes locking. She forgot the shooting star, she forgot the world, there was only this moment.
He gazed into her dark blue eyes, they always reminded him of the water in the Caribbean where he vacationed as a child. He felt lost at sea in her eyes, helpless, as if the only one who could save him was her.
She gazed back into his warm brown eyes feeling safe and warm. Completely oblivious to the cold gust of wind that tossed the hair about her face. Her heart was racing and she felt warm as if she was laying in the sun on a tropical beach. Her lips parted slightly and wisp of steam escaping in the cool night air.
With the back of his hand he gently brushed a lock of hair away from her cheek and gliding his hand down onto her shoulder and closed his eyes. He felt as if he was diving off a cliff into those blue waters as their lips met.
Her lips were soft and warm, the flavor of her cherry lip gloss would linger with him for hours. And all for the better because neither wanted this moment to end. He kissed her softly and tenderly, but with passion and love that flowed through their lips like electricity. As their lips slowly drifted apart she playfully bit his lower lip and then they gazed into each others eyes again for a second trying to catch their breath.
They turned to look up at the stars and as he wrapped his arm around her lower back and she placed her head on his shoulder. As they gazed up into the sky they drifted along among the millions of stars, but they were together and no longer alone.
